A Small City Adventure

Our friends Alfie and Judy moved to New York from Minnesota a couple of years ago. Since they moved here we have gone on a few adventures together. Last fall they drove us up the Hudson River to Cold Spring. Sunday, we made the trip to the least New York part of the city, Govenor's Island. You take the ferry from the southern tip of Manhattan. When you arrive, you feel miles away from the hustle and bustle instead of being just a ten minute boat ride away. The island has served as a military base since the early 1800s. There is a wonderful fort  to wander through. Govenor's Island served as a Coast Guard base for a couple of decades. During those years it functioned like a town with an elementary school and houses of worship. After a few decades of indecision the island now serves as an arts center during the summer months. Artists can apply for studio spaces in one of the beautiful wooden houses. Each of the houses was assigned to a group and visitors could wander though the...

Getting ready to go on the road

In just over an hour we depart for parts west.  This is a multi-part trip spanning three weeks.  We will be experiencing a range of climates and of course limited amounts of luggage. So the answer to that conundrum is layers. I have been preparing by  washing, pressingand mending this stack of cashmere sweaters. Some had moth holes that needed tending to, blown out armpits that were stitched up and a couple needed new buttons. Yesterday i went to pick up a couple of necessities for the trip and found these  completely disgusting and amusing gummy candies. I wished that my kids had been at my side to share in my amusement.  I'm sure that we would have egged one another  on to fits of hilarity.  We loved going to grocery stores together and being silly. No I didn't buy any packages of the gummy junk food. The photos will just have to do.  I was feeling a bit of anticipatory home sickness yesterday. Perhaps that isn't the right way of describin...

A small outing

Both my husband and I thought we would work yesterday, but when my husband suggested that we play hooky from our responsibilities and go on a small outing. We decided to go to the New York Historical Society. Amazon.com Widgets First we waited for the bus which gave us the time to pay attention to the familiar landscape. I have been fond of this 1920's Tudor revival brick apartment house since I moved to the neighborhood. I am a sucker for fancy brickwork. My husband pointed out a detail of the building that neither of us had noticed before. That great scalloped terracotta tile at the roof line is just amazing. The bus took a while to arrive so we had a long time to admire that tile. I had lots of time to admire trees in Central Park. On the way to the exhibit we had planned to see we were gobsmacked by an exhibit of  Larry Silver Photographs . You can see a few of the images if you click on the link. The images capture the ordinary in New York City life in ...

Out and about uptown and down

First uptown.  I'm loving the ornate street lamps along 116th street. Earlier this week I had a down town adventure with my friend Alix. We had initially planned to go to the Whitney near the Highline. The line was depressingly long so instead we decided to wander. Happily, Alix is as much of an architecture geek as I am. This building seemed to have dragon themed decorative details I loved the towers on top of this building. We both had a satisfying adventure looking at stuff. Amazon.com Widgets
