Some Signs of Spring and a Museum Visit

Our trip to California had two purposes. The first was to visit with people that we love. We knew that we had accomplished that goal while we were still in california. The other purpose of our trip was to skip those long and draggy days of winter when it feels like winter will never end. Our second goal was accomplished as well. The bulbs in our tree pits have emerged from their winter bedding and will soon begin to bloom. Spring arrived while we were away. Yesterday, I had an appointment not too far from FIT so I went to visit their museum. The upstairs lobby was showing  a lovely exhibit  organized by students. As promised it was filled with glittery things. I especially loved this draped sarong skirt worn by Gypsy rose lee and designed by Bonnie Cashin. I never would have expected this particular combination of  client and designer.  Bonnie Cashin  is known for her simple, uncomplicated almost utilitarian (yet luxurious) garments.  Gypsy Rose Lee i...

Food and fashion...and food

Yesterday I gave myself a reward day and went to visit the museum at FIT. My big projects of the summer were completed and delivered. I cooked for the high holidays. We got ready for our trip to Israel--- ( and all the adventures that ensued. We are, like everyone, else obsessed by the news but I really wanted to take a break and visit the museum. The current exhibit is called Food and Fashion. You can enter the exhibit virtually  here . The upstairs exhibition spaces are being prepared for new exhibits so it was just the downstairs gallery. There were lots of garments by Moschino, as one might expect. I love the Moschino garments from this era. The garment shapes are so classic and the embellishments are so delightful.   The Chanel skirt below  is supposed to res...

A Food Friday Blog Salad

First an apology to all of you who used to subscribe to my blog and were used to getting an email when a new post appeared. Blogger has discontinued that service. There are other ways to have people sign up to subscribe but I haven't been able to figure out any of those services. If you are willing to help me figure out how to do this-please be in touch---I will be so grateful. The High Holiday season is both synagogue and cooking seasons. I took a break yesterday and ran away to see the current exhibits at FIT. The upstairs gallery had an exhibit of Balenciaga and Dior. After seeing the exhibit I can tell you that I am on Team Balenciaga---the photos that follow are all of his work. The piecing on the bodice of this dress is just so incredibly beautifully done. I am not going to get too technical here but you might want to pay attention to how each of the stripes march up. For those of you with more advanced dressmaking knowledge just take a look at how those three inset vees...
