Heading towards the finish line

After I posted the last batch of photos about Cavill's tallit someone who has known me since before I was born commented that I was talented. While it is always nice to receive a compliment, I actually don't think that a good piece is really a result of talent, but rather is is the end result after hundreds and hundreds of failures. Amazon.com Widgets So at this point the tallit is pieced, nicely edged and is awaiting the atara/ neckband and the pinot /corner pieces. I'm really excited and want to share some photos. No you are not imagining the hundreds of untrimmed threads. I will trim all of the threads but I was really excited and photographed with all of the mess. Hope you can see past the threads. Yes, the text appears upside down  when the tallit is simply draped and not folded into proper wearing shape. This does look like an error but it is deliberate. This tallit makes me so completely happy. It fits so comfortably into the vernacular of a tr...

Seeing neighbors in the museum

This afternoon, my husband and I decided to to go to the Museum of the City of New York. There were a few exhibits that seemed appealing. We hopped on the bus and went cross-town to the East Side. Amazon.com Widgets That particular stretch of Fifth Avenue was built mostly in the 1920's. The Federalist revival was in full swing. Buildings built during the 1920's tend to have facades that are much flatter than those built from the 1880's to the end of WWI. I was charmed by this building that seems to have been built in a hybrid Federalist/Egyptian revival style with a bit of Gothic /Deco thrown in for good measure.  I know that some architectural critics were made crazy by these sorts of architectural style salads. Visually though, the composition works and it made me happy to look at it when I walked by. I just loved this view looking east on one of the cross streets.  We went to the Museum to see the exhibit of Jacob Riis photographs and the on...

Out and about uptown and down

First uptown.  I'm loving the ornate street lamps along 116th street. Earlier this week I had a down town adventure with my friend Alix. We had initially planned to go to the Whitney near the Highline. The line was depressingly long so instead we decided to wander. Happily, Alix is as much of an architecture geek as I am. This building seemed to have dragon themed decorative details I loved the towers on top of this building. We both had a satisfying adventure looking at stuff. Amazon.com Widgets

A Post Rosh HaShanah Walk

One of the many pleasures of living in my neighborhood is the richness of architectural textures. The current buildings in my neighborhood were built mostly between 1880 and the late 1920’s. It was a great era for home building.   Once the Depression began there was very little new construction  until tax laws changed in the 1980’s and there was something of a building boomlet than continues until today.   Yesterday my husband and I went for a walk with a friend. It was a spectacularly beautiful day. After being indoors for services for three days running, it was a pleasure to be out and about. There is something so delightfully over the top about two cherubs holding a banner with the balding number. I love the grille texture behind the banner. You can see the cherub a bit better here. You can also see the unfortunate choice of lighting fixture. It’s too small and not nearly grand enough for the entry way.   Griffins hold up balustrades on fences ...
