some work and a bit of cooking

In  a recent post I had posted one small photo of Nini's atara. I need to correct that.

There was so much work that went into this atara.

First, let's start with the text which is two verse fragments from Chapter 16 of the Book of Chronicles.

Let the sea and all within it thunder,
the fields and everything in them exult;

We are using the first half of verse 32 and the first half of the next verse.

then shall all the trees of the forest shout for joy
at the presence of the LORD,
for He is coming to rule the earth

I hand couched the ocean text onto appliqued ocean that I made out of silk that I had dyed.

The sky above the ocean was a little excercise in obsession.  I hand couched hand dyed silk embroidery threads to resemble a stormy sky.

And now on to the left side of the atara. I embroidered a few stars onto the sky and then hand embroidered the letters for the words which in the translation above is rendered as "shout for joy".

I indicated trees first with a simple embroidery stitch and then with bigger trees made with  freehand machine embroidery. Yes, I am aware that I have to trim the threads on the larger trees.

Yesterday, I worked on creating beach roses.

I dyed some silk magenta. While the silk dried i consulted with YouTube to figure out the best way for me to construct  silk beach roses that could put up with a bunch of use. A tallit is used and manipulated. The roses would need to put up with daily handling.

Once it was dry I cut out a bunch of circles using the top of my spray starch can as a template.

Then it was time to construct the roses. Each circle got folded in half. Then I did a running stitch along the doubled curved edges.

I pulled the thread and then the petals gathered up to look sort of like the beach roses.

I knew that I needed to add the yellow pistils and stamens to the center.

Teeny golden glass beads stood in for the yellow centers.

Nini was concertned that my roses didn't have that great fuschia that she loved in the beach roses  and they read a bit too red/orange. Some of that is my camera. But the color is changeable and in certain lights does read a bit more orange. So it is off to another round of dyeing silk.

This will need another couple of layers of color. I will keep you posted.

I cooked for Shabbat.

We are having chicken with amba cooked on a bed of shredded zucchini and carrots. I also made a gazpacho and baked potatoes.

My husband doesn't love the pungent taste of amba as much as I do, but he loves me enough to occasionally indulge.

Shabbat Shalom! Hoping that this week we wil get news of peace.

You are faithful to restore the dead to life. Blessed are You, Adonoy, Resurrector of the dead. That particular line is recited at every single prayer service every day three times a day, unless you use a Reform or Reconstructionist prayer book . In those liturgies instead of praising God for resurrecting the dead God is praised for  giving life to all.  I am enough of a modern woman, a modern thinker, to not actually believe in the actual resurrection of the dead. I don't actually expect all of the residents of the Workmen's Circle section of  Mount Hebron cemetery in Queens to get up and get back to work at their sewing machines. I don't expect the young children buried here or  the babies buried here to one day get up and frolic. Yet, every single time I get up to lead services I say those words about the reanimating of the dead with every fiber of my being. Yesterday, I e...

Connecting with the past

A few months ago I had a craving for my father’s chicken fricassee.  If my father were still alive I would have called him up and he would have talked me through the process of making it.    My father is no longer alive so I turned to my cookbooks and the recipes I found for chicken fricassee were nothing at all like the stew of chicken necks, gizzards and wings in a watery sweet and sour tomato sauce that I enjoyed as a kid.  I assumed that the dish was an invention of my father’s. I then attempted to replicate the dish from my memory of it and failed.   A couple of weeks ago I saw an article on the internet, and I can’t remember where, that talked about Jewish fricassee  and it sounded an awful lot like the dish I was hankering after. This afternoon I went to the butcher and picked up all of the chicken elements of the dish, a couple of packages each of wings, necks and gizzards. My father never cooked directly from a cook book. He used to re...

The light themed tallit has been shipped!!!

I had begun speaking to Sarah about making her a tallit in the middle of August. It took a few weeks to nail down the design. For Sarah it would have been ideal if the tallit were completed in time for her to wear it on Rosh HaShanah., the beginning of her year as senior rabbi of her congregation. For me, in an ideal world, given the realities of preparing for the High Holidays I would have finished this tallit in the weeks after Sukkot. So we compromised and I shipped off the tallit last night.  I would have prefered to have more time but I got the job done in time. This tallit was made to mark Sarah's rise to the position of senior rabbi but it was also a reaction to this year of darkness. She chose a selection of verses about light to be part of her tallit. God of awesome deeds ( from a yom kippur Liturgical poem) 2) May You shine a new light on Zion ( from the liturgy) 3)  יָאֵר יְהֹ...
