It's been a week.

 I have been in touch with friends and family in Israel.

There have been exchanges of darkly funny memes that are impossible to translate into English and I think that they have kept all of us going. There is much to be said for dark humor during dark times.


I baked this bread two days ago.


I just learned that bread looks prettier if you score the crust when you form the loaf, and not just before the bread goes into the oven. And in the spirit of honesty, here is a less pretty view of the loaf.


I  think I hadn't let rise quite long enough for the second rise. My husband isn't one to spread butter on bread .Lately he has deemed some of my loaved worthy of being embellished with a bit of butter. This loaf is one of those loaves. 



I got the upper part of Tim's atara done.



The lettering is completed. All of those letters have been couched with heavy gold cord stitched down with blue silk thread.


I also couched hand dyed silk embroidery floss to the ends of the atara.



Yes, the little threads will be removed.




The spices for today's chicken had me singing, "I have the whole world in my bowl", at the top of my lungs before I began rubbing the mixture on the two chickens.  In the bowl you see a mix of Sri Lancan, curry, Jamaican curry and Bells Seasoning.



I don't know if it will taste good but it smelled incredible as it was cooking.





During COVID, I was watching a whole lot of Israeli cooking videos. It seemed like Israeli baking was not possible without the addition of powdered vanilla pudding. Amusingly to me, the name of the product in Hebrew is  "Vanilla Pudding".  I was so amused that this morning I had three packages of Israeli vanilla pudding in my pantry. Passover is coming. I needed to get rid of them.

I used two of the packages in this pie.




There is an almond crust below and I tried to get the pudding to taste less chemically by adding fresh clementine peel and clementine juice to the pudding. Most of a container of blueberries is in there too.  Hopefully the pie won't taste like a chemical factory.


A bit of work on my corner. If I were a little kid I would have stayed here all day to watch.

Connecting with the past

A few months ago I had a craving for my father’s chicken fricassee.  If my father were still alive I would have called him up and he would have talked me through the process of making it.    My father is no longer alive so I turned to my cookbooks and the recipes I found for chicken fricassee were nothing at all like the stew of chicken necks, gizzards and wings in a watery sweet and sour tomato sauce that I enjoyed as a kid.  I assumed that the dish was an invention of my father’s. I then attempted to replicate the dish from my memory of it and failed.   A couple of weeks ago I saw an article on the internet, and I can’t remember where, that talked about Jewish fricassee  and it sounded an awful lot like the dish I was hankering after. The light themed tallit has been shipped!!!

 I had begun speaking to Sarah about making her a tallit in the middle of August. It took a few weeks to nail down the design. For Sarah it would have been ideal if the tallit were completed in time for her to wear it on Rosh HaShanah., the beginning of her year as senior rabbi of her congregation. For me, in an ideal world, given the realities of preparing for the High Holidays I would have finished this tallit in the weeks after Sukkot. So we compromised and I shipped off the tallit last night.  I would have prefered to have more time but I got the job done in time. This tallit was made to mark Sarah's rise to the position of senior rabbi but it was also a reaction to this year of darkness.
