Tying the tzitzit for Adam’s tallit

Adam and his wife, Barbara came by this afternoon to tie the tzitzit for his tallit. I don’t know if you can see in the photo, but Adam is a pretty short guy.  Barbara is perfectly proportioned to Adam. The two of them are crazy in love. It was just so sweet to see the two of them together.

Best of all, aside from their sweet relationship, they loved the tallit. Adam insisted that he would have trouble tying the tzitzit.  He did fine. Each of them tied two of the corners. As they worked, we told stories and laughed.adam tallit tie 2

I used prayer books to weigh down the tallit to make it easier to tie the tzitzit.

I loved working with Adam. I hope that he continues to enjoy his tallit for many, many years.

  1. In recent weeks I received two requests for tallits less than 70 inches long. Strangely, I've found that none the tallit makers in Israel make anything smaller than 70, 72, 77 or even 80 inches long. I was quite surprised, because there are a lot of not-so-tall bar mitzvah boys out there shopping for a tallit.

  2. Ben - this is why there is a need for people like me, where I can custom make items for a client's specific needs. Most of the Israeli tallit makers are factories, and are making only limited sizes. It's cheaper to work that way--with a limited array of sizes.
I have an advertisement from early in the 20th century and tallitot were sold in a much wider array of sizes than they are now. But shoes and clothing was also sold in a wider array of sizes.
I guess that if people want something specific or are outside of the regular size range it makes a whole lot of sense for them to work with me, or another person who actually makes tallitot to size, as opposed to just pulling something off of a shelf.

  3. Ben - I also want to thank you for posting honestly, as the owner of a commercial tallit site. All too often I get comments from people posting anonymously with links to their commercial sites. I find that kind of sneaky and underhanded. The fact that you are up-front about your and your relationship to it site means that Iam willing to post your comment and not ship it off to spam.
