clothing made this week

Several years ago I saw the most amazing fabric at New York Elegant Fabrics. It was raw looking varigated yarn in various thickness and wild colors embedded in a mesh background. I was in love, but it was really ( as my Southern friends say) spendy so I admired it, a lot, and left it in the store. Later that year, I was able to purchase a teeny remnant of the fabric from B+J's remnant table. I made scarves for a couple of people I really loved, there wasn't enough to make a garment.

Last year, www.fabricmartfabrics.com was selling the same amazing fabric for an affordable price. I bought some. Then they put it on sale. So I bought some more. The fabric has been sitting in my stash. i was to o afraid to cut into it. Last week I decided that it was time. I wrapped the fabric around me, cut it slightly bigger than my hips, and then cut curves from waist to hips. I cut the opening for the zipper just long enough for the zipper, and inserted an industrial looking metal zipper, tapes exposed. I have been seeing that a whole lot in RTW this year. So here it is. I'm wearing the skirt tomorrow with this cashmere t-shirt.

Sunday, we have to go to a black tie wedding. It's on Long Island. I had made a black tie appropriate dress two years ago that I have worn a ton, so it was time for something new. www.fabrics.com is having a giant sale on Vera Wang fabrics. The fabrics were inexpensive enough so I could buy just because they appealed to me. The silver/grey fabric is a heavy poly with an amazing drape. I cut the bodice on the bias and the skirt is a circle skirt because I assume that I will be doing lots of dancing at this wedding. The dress is edged with a silk/metallic that is a chiffon weight. The obi sash helps folks to overlook the many flaws in fit.

The dress is comfortable to wear and will be fun to dance in.

  1. Lovely pieces. I love the skirt. It's such attention getting fabric that it needed a simple pattern. I am a big fan of exposed zippers too, and yours look right at home.
    Have a lovely Chanukah!

  2. Thanks nancy!

I wore the skirt on Saturday, and I have never gotten so many compliments on a garment I have made.

I ended up not wearing the silver dress. My husband thought 9 correctly) that it didn't flatter my body so well. I have ideas about how to improve the dress.
