My buddy came to town on Wednesday for a New York fix. The wonderful thing about having a sewing buddy come to town is that it becomes possible to do the wall to wall fiber touring that my family can do only in small doses.

We saw the Fashioning Felt exhibit at the Cooper Hewett. You can visit virtually http://http//exhibitions.cooperhewitt.org/Fashioning-Felt/.
The exhibit was fabulous. It was just plain fun. It is such a tactile intense exhibit that I had to control myself from not just touching, but also rolling around on the pieces exhibited. Clearly, I wasn't the only person who felt this way, ( pun NOT intended) because there were small samples of the felt to touch near the exit of the exhibit.
We also went to the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, which was something of a disappointment.
This year too many of the rooms had a creepy edge to them. Some rooms made me feel so uncomfortable, I had to walk out of them. Perhaps the designers were reacting to our anxious times. Usually, one tends to crave comfort rather than more anxiety in anxious times. it will be interesting to see what next year's house brings.
Our last stop for the day was http://julieartisans.com/history.html. Check out the site, but the actual store has better and more interesting things. So worth a visit if you are in New York and want to see actual art to wear as opposed to what usually passes for that.

I confess that I had never heard of Valentina Schlee. Thank you for sharing her amazing work. That copper colored, twist front dress is beautiful! (Velvet burnout? Couldn't tell from the video) I'd be thrilled to spend a day like that. I'm sure you had a lovely time.
ReplyDeleteThere was an article several years ago in Threads magazine about Valentina. Earlier this year I saw my first piece of Valentina clothing at an Art Deco exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York. The simple dress blew me away. That particular dess was not in this exhibit. The dress though, was a big influence on the dress I had made for my son's Bar Mitzvah.
